Here: Tell us what you do and why you do it.
Cam Barrett: I design and create sculptural lighting using digital tools and 3D printing. My work explores movement within form, driven by a desire to shape atmosphere and transform space through illumination and expressive silhouettes.
Here: When did you start making them and why?
CB: I started making them in recent years, as my background in visual effects and digital sculpture shifted toward physical objects. I was drawn to working with real-world lighting – creating pieces that influence how a space is felt and experienced.
Here: How did you want them to feel and how did the design evolve over time?
CB: I wanted my pieces to feel unique and quietly engaging. Over time, my work has evolved through experimentation with movement, alongside an expanding ability to realise forms at a larger scale.
Here: How are they made?
CB: I design my forms and internal components using 3D-animation and digital-sculpting software. They are produced on a range of 3D printers using 100 percent recycled PLA – a bioplastic typically derived from cornstarch and sugarcane. The recycled filament is sourced from a manufacturer in Tokoroa.
Here: Why are lamps important – and what makes a good one?
CB: Lamps and lighting are key to creating calm, considered living environments. A good lamp provides functional light while shaping mood, with a balance of form and material.
