From My Window: Factory Reset

Rachel Easting enjoys the best of both worlds in the capital.

Our workroom is in Ghuznee Street, Te Aro, Te Whanganui-a-Tara Wellington. We moved in here in 2011 so it feels like our second home. We have a long, industrial, north-facing space with a bank of windows along the end, which overlooks the Hannahs Factory. The floors and walls are concrete, so as the sun streams in all day long it heats the room. It is always cosy in here, no matter what is happening outside the window.

We love our outlook – there is a parking lot across the street, which means we aren’t hemmed in with a building across the road. There is so much light to enjoy, and always something to peer at on the street below. Below us we have had the luck of having two of the best cafes in Wellington. Sadly, Milk Crate is no longer there, but our daily wander downstairs to Customs is one of the most special parts of being here. Bathed in sun, and greeted by the best team and coffee, it’s such a hub for so many Wellingtonians. We’re always bumping into friends and locals.

In the evening, when I return to my home in the suburb of Northland, I look west, out to the hills, Ōtari bush, and our neighbours’ nīkau and punga. Being so close to Zealandia means we have kākā flying past every day and our garden is full of kererū, tūī, and pīwakawaka. It’s so peaceful and lush, and the perfect counterpart to the cityscape during the day.
