Here 15 is our second annual Here Awards issue, celebrating a diverse range of houses from around Aotearoa with seven incredible projects and five winners.

Best House Aotearoa 2022 is Waimataruru, by Pac Studio and Kristina Pickford Design at Ōtama on the Coromandel Peninsula. Designed to have a unique relationship with its extraordinary coastal site, the house steps down the hill through a series of timber portals, with each function on a different level and with a different view. It's beautiful, thanks to a restrained palette of tactile, natural materials and some incredible collections. But it's easy to be distracted by that, and forget its environnentally friendly credentials, featuring off-grid energy systems, low embodied carbon, high thermal performance and an extensive replanting programme.

Other winners? Herbst Architects design a delicate house on a sand-dune, Edwards White create a cricket pavilion in a Waikato paddock, Monk Mackenzie and Amelia Holmes reinvent apartment living in Taāmaki Makaurau and Mitchell Coll of Fabric conceives a delightful utility shed in the bush.

Also! RTA Studio return to build a guest house on an incredible site in Wānaka, a pedestrian-friendly hangout in Whanganui and Jane Ussher documents the homes of obsessive collectors.
