We're so excited to bring you two houses in Te Whanganui-a-Tara Wellington on Saturday 23 July.

The Houses

Perched on steel piles at the top of an axe-handle section with pedestrian access only, Stealth Bomber has two arms, wrapped around a sheltered courtyard and dodging established pōhutukawa, its roofline skating in under height-to-boundary rules in a boomerang shape that gave it its nickname. Under that, rooms are arranged effortlessly – a two-storey wing with bedrooms above and utilities below; and an open-living area with a snug that seems to float in the trees. Originally built by Patchwork's Sally Ogle and Ben Mitchell-Anyon, along with Ogle's partner, as a share house and now in the ownership of Ogle and partner, it’s transitioned effortlessly to easy-going family home.

Ten minutes' drive away, the Thornton-Hasegawa House by Bonnifait + Giesen Architects is a two-bedroom tower with a low impact on the environment: a 50-square-metre footprint, off-grid features and solar batteries. Built on another steep site, the house has a lovely connection with its environment, an open feel from shared volumes – and a sense of fun, marked by bright yellow highlights throughout and a looseness that comes from the use of humble materials used in surprising ways.
