Situ Studio offers contemporary homeware with a sense of history woven in, says founder Rosa Milne.

HERE: Tell us what you do and why you do it.

ROSA MILNE: Situ Studio presents a thoughtful collection of products for the home offering uncompromising quality, humble luxury and enduring beauty. Our own designs, along with the curation of objects that sit alongside these, are built on the idea of offering products that are unique, exclusive or limited editions. Basically, we didn’t want to provide goods to our customers that are commonplace. We are a seasonless brand, preferring to promote longevity over trends, to ensure we support mindful consumption and are gentle on the earth. Situ Studio fosters long-term relationships with creatives and manufacturers who share a passion for quality and craftsmanship, both within New Zealand and overseas.

HERE: Why did you start with blankets?

RM: I have a deep connection with natural materials, good design and humble luxury. As we’re based in Queenstown, the raw beauty of the environment influences the thoughtful presentation of each blanket design and colour palette. The idea of offering desirable and limited-edition designs that sit effortlessly within any interior, while being cherished for generations to come, was the vision for Situ Studio.

HERE: Tell us about how and where they are made?

RM: Each blanket is carefully crafted in small batches in Ireland using authentic Donegal tweed wool. We work closely with the sixth-generation family-owned weaving mill to create our limited-edition blankets which have the allure of history while retaining a contemporary modern feel. There is a captivating beauty and consistency of quality found in traditional tweed wool which is undeniable.

HERE: How do you choose the other (beautiful) things you sell?

RM: While curating unique collectable pieces, it was important to us that each product sit cohesively alongside our blanket collection. Situ Studio sources a thoughtful presentation of objects, by both local and international makers, that are chosen for their ability to celebrate considered design and enduring beauty within the home.

HERE: What’s next for Situ Studio?

RM: Staying true to our core belief of being rooted in an appreciation for timeless modern design, exceptional craftsmanship and humble luxury, we will continue to source and design a collection of conscious pieces that evoke emotion for our customers, while working alongside the artists and makers who create them in creative exploration.
