Since the Covid lockdowns of 2020 and 2021, demand for therapy and psychological help has surged beyond anything the industry is able to provide – an issue and a need that has not diminished with time.
While art psychotherapist Asha Munn and her team couldn’t see people in person, as essential workers they were able to deliver care packages and offer online sessions to their clients – which sparked an idea.
Munn is a registered art psychotherapist and therapist, as well as a graduate of the Elam School of Fine Arts. In 2016, she started Breathing Space, where young people could explore their mental wellbeing through art and creativity. Now, she’s launched With Wonder, inspired by those lockdown care packages.
With Wonder makes and sells art boxes online. They’re designed to provide a practical way to support mental health through art and creativity, guiding you through a self-directed therapeutic experience. The organisation collaborates with well-known New Zealand artists – including Jade Townsend, Te Ara Minhinnick, Yolunda Hickman, and Lissy and Rudi – to create distinct experiences across a range of disciplines and themes.
While the approach is not intended to solve all your problems or act as a replacement for therapy, it does give you a moment to explore and reflect – and it is informed by therapeutic models. “The integrated approach is our own, based on our own experience, specialised training and research,” says Munn. “We do this by encouraging you to be emotionally curious, reflecting on different ideas and exploring the world around you.”
