Grain of Truth

A 1970s bungalow is given a restful makeover using products from ABI.

Set back from Currumbin Beach on Queensland’s Gold Coast, this former 1970s brick-and-tile house has been remade as something much gentler: a timber-lined bungalow that combines the easy-going spirit of coastal California and the quiet philosophy of wabi-sabi. Mosh Home and Brad Ruddell Design led the renovation. β€œOur clients were clear on their vision from the start,” says Libby Brady, director of Mosh Home. β€œThey wanted to focus on bringing the outside in, and in terms of the build itself, they wanted to focus on using beautiful, quality materials.”

‍

The single-level family home sits on a leafy street backing onto parkland. Its faΓ§ade is wrapped in blackbutt shiplap and softened by native planting. Stone pavers lead inside to an open-plan kitchen, living and dining area. The hero materials here are terracotta tiles and spotted-gum veneer. β€œFor us, this home is all about craft,” says Brady. β€œEvery space is considered. Every room is intentional.”

‍

In the kitchen and butler’s pantry, there are just two materials at play. A generous spotted-gum island sits against a stainless-steel benchtop and splashback, finished with ABI’s Elysian Commercial Pull-Out Kitchen Mixer in matching stainless steel. Both surfaces will pick up marks over time, and that’s exactly the point. Beyond the kitchen, the living area steps down into a sunken living room built by Mosh Joinery, with light filtering through sheer curtains.

‍

In the bathrooms, terracotta floors meet spotted-gum cabinetry, travertine benchtops and beige wall tiles, all complemented by ABI’s brushed-nickel tapware. β€œThe brushed-nickel is pared back and minimal, allowing those beautiful, quality materials to shine,” says Brady. The terracotta and timber carry on through the bedrooms and laundry. Full-height sliders open to a covered outdoor room with a barbecue, kitchen and fireplace, looking out over the pool and parkland.

‍

β€œIt’s been a joy to visit the home to see how it’s evolved in the short time they’ve lived here,” says Brady.  – I can’t wait to see how it grows with them.”
