Five Years of Here

A celebration of

I remember the day we decided we’d start Here. It was lockdown, 2020. A couple of weeks before, Bauer Media had shut down its New Zealand operations, along with all its magazines, one of which I used to edit. I had a burning sense that I wasn’t done with magazines, or with architecture.

After sifting about for a few weeks, and realising that (a) no jobs were forthcoming and (b) we had an impending house purchase, I rang Sarah Gladwell, our design director – also in lockdown, in her Sydney apartment – and we got to work.

We said we’d make one issue and see how it went. We made a media kit. Then we set out to sell some advertising, find some houses, write some stories – make a magazine.

It felt like pretend. Sometimes it still does, until you look at all 31 of Sarah’s beautiful covers below and see the years of work, inspiration and fun. The magazine has grown into something progressive, thoughtful, enthusiastic. We like to think we’ve encouraged a new sort of architecture in this country.

Thank you to everyone who has helped to get us this far, but in particular to Sarah for her unfailing creativity and flexibility. To copy editor Alex Scott for her nuanced editing and excellent headlines. To Harriet Cowie for her cracking copy and excellent chat. To Hannah Kidd, big boss, for her calm and wisdom.

Here’s to another 31.
