There’s a distinct shift to texture in our interiors – even in the most architecturally precise buildings. Family-owned Ambitec is a maker of polished-plaster finishes that elevate interiors into spaces with soul. “It’s a versatile and durable finish,” says creative director Wendy Nannestad, “which adds warmth and a sense of luxury to interiors.”
HERE: What is polished plaster?
Wendy Nannestad: Polished plaster is a versatile decorative wall and ceiling finish known for its smooth, stone-like appearance. Synthetic or natural, often mixed with marble chip or aggregate, it is applied in multiple layers to create a range of finishes, from highly polished to textured and matte.
H: How much can we customise it?
WN: Ambitec polished plasters are extremely versatile in their ability to be applied to a number of surfaces, including walls, ceilings, fireplaces and even cabinetry. They are also fully customisable in colour, texture and form.
H: Where can we use them?
WN: Our finishes can be used in residential and commercial environments, on most surfaces and substrates, Although you can use our finishes in bathrooms with an added clear surface sealer, they cannot be installed inside a shower cubicle.
H: New Zealanders have become increasingly comfortable with colour. How have you seen this change?
WN: Over the past five years we have seen a shift from light greys and whites to warmer whites, beiges and taupey browns. Colour has always been popular in commercial spaces but has recently started making its way into the home, in particular powder rooms and bedrooms. Dark green, dusty pink, ink blue, burgundy and chocolate brown – vibrant natural tones, but with an edge.
H: How do we go about choosing the right product and colour?
WN: Understanding your space, its light source, and where you are looking to use polished plaster will help to inform the best product, texture and colour for your space. Once we understand your vision, we will work with you to select the right finish and provide small colour and texture samples to put alongside your material palette and visualise in your space.
