A decade ago, architect Braden Harford of Maguire and Harford Architects bought a site in Cashmere that had previously been occupied by two quake-damaged townhouses. He took the corner site, and built himself a home.

‍

That house, H01, is small and unapologetically hard-edged: raw concrete block outside, an inky, cave-like interior within. Windows are carefully placed into the block, catching particular slivers of light and view rather than simply gazing out. It reads somethign like a monastery – a house of respite, contemplation and memory.

‍

Now, he has built H02 next door – a related building, rather than a copy. It sits high, looking out across treetops, down the valley and towards the city.Β As with H01, windows are carefully placed for views and privacy, and the way the light changes through the day.
‍

Daily living is contained on one level – an open-plan kitchen, dining and living space with level entry from parking – along with the main bedroom – while a second bedroom, laundry and storage sit below. An oversized, cantilevered carport does double duty as shelter and as a piece of architecture in its own right.

‍

For a suburb that trades on bush, views and quiet, H02 offers something more particular: a house with a genuine point of view, standing right beside the building that started it.
